The cancellation of a unique sci-fi series shortly after its debut has sparked discussions among fans and industry insiders alike. Taika Waititi’s latest endeavor, Time Bandits, has ended after a single season, a mere 54 days post-premiere. The show, originating from a collaboration between Waititi, Jermaine Clement, and Iain Morris, was inspired by Terry Gilliam’s beloved cult classic from 1981, which featured a group of miscreants traveling through time to pilferhistorical treasures.
Though its reception was relatively positive, with scores of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes and 65% on Metacritic, the series didn't manage to capture a significant audience. The ensemble cast was notable, including well-known figures from the comedy scene such as Matt King from Peep Show, Mark Gatiss from Sherlock, and Jonathan Brugh from What We Do in the Shadows. In addition, Clement and Waititi took on roles as Pure Evil and the Supreme Being respectively, with Lisa Kudrow leading the cast alongside Kal-El Tuck playing Kevin.
Reports from Deadline indicate that, while Time Bandits found some success in the UK, it did not manage to secure a spot in Nielsen's top 10 rankings. This cancellation adds to the growing list of series that have been pulled this year, with other high-profile projects reminiscent of The Acolyte in the Star Wars cosmos, Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives, and Amazon’s My Lady Jane also facing similar fates. The latter decision particularly irked George R.R. Martin, who expressed his thoughts on his personal blog regarding the show’s abrupt end.
Martin reflected fondly on the narratives surrounding alternate history, especially the character of Jane Grey, England’s queen for just nine days. He commended My Lady Jane for its innovative and witty take on historical fantasy, which unfolds in a world populated by witches and shape-shifters and where Jane enjoys a longer reign than in reality. He voiced his belief that Jane, and the series as a whole, deserved more than a fleeting existence as merely eight episodes.
