Post the release of Saints Row: The Third, Volition seems to have deviated from the elements that made the franchise so appealing. Neither Saints Row IV nor Saints Row: Gat out of Hell achieved commercial success, leading to a seven-year hiatus for the series. The reboot, Saints Row, was released last year but failed miserably, resulting in Embracer discontinuing Volition amid their ongoing restructuring.
However, according to Youtuber mrsaintsgodzilla21, things could have been significantly different. Allegedly, Volition had plans to revisit the series' roots with a game more akin to Saints Row 2, featuring characters like Aisha, Dex, Pierce, Shaundi, and Johnny Gat. Even though the game was intended to be more realistic, it would still retain its beloved over-the-top moments.
Regrettably, publisher Deep Silver rejected this concept and drastically altered the course during development. This resulted in last year's lackluster and flawed reboot. Even though Volition is no longer operational, Deep Silver has assured fans that there will be more from the Saints Row franchise in the future. Hopefully they'll reconsider and adopt Volition's original vision for the game that seemed promising among fans.
